Presented by PDX Jazz. Saxophonist Tia Fuller.
“…at root she’s a hard-core bebopper, a Charlie Parker to Cannonball Adderley kind of player…It’s in her aggressive alto-saxophone tone…” – The New York Times
When Mack Avenue recording artist Tia Fuller picks up her sax to play, something amazing happens as the reverberations of her musical elixir fill the room. It is her uncanny ability to do so that led Tia to be selected as a member and featured soloist of pop/R&B star Beyoncé’s touring band with whom Tia has played all throughout the US, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia, including a high profile gig for former President Barack Obama at The White House. Tia is also an accomplished bandleader, having recorded four albums with her own quartet. Her most recent opus, Angelic Warrior, was met with critical acclaim from Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and countless jazz publications. Tia’s quartet has performed world-wide, including stops in Angola, Croatia, South Africa and beyond as well as at jazz festivals such as North Sea, Umbria, and Edinburgh just to name a few.
Tia has also appeared on a number of major television shows, such as The Oprah Winfrey Show, Today Show, Good Morning America, BET Awards, American Music Awards, Total Request Live, and the 2010 Grammy® Awards. She has also toured and/or recorded with a who’s who of the music world including Terri Lyne Carrington’s Grammy® Award-winning Mosaic Project, Esperanza Spalding, Dianne Reeves, Ralph Peterson, Geri Allen, Jon Faddis, Chaka Kahn, Jay-Z, Jill Scott, Pattie Labelle, Dionne Warwick, Janelle Monet, Patrice Rushen, Erykah Badu and Aretha Franklin. In addition, she has received numerous awards of distinction including winning DownBeat Critic’s Poll for “Rising Star” two years in a row for Soprano Sax (2014) and for Alto Sax and Flute (2013). With music in her blood and a song in her heart, she wants people to be uplifted through her music, compelling them to move forward not in fear, but in love and faith.
