PDX Jazz Presents: Manuel Valera Trio (Late Show)

Based in New York City, Grammy nominated artist, pianist and composer Manuel Valera was born and raised in Havana, Cuba. Since arriving in NYC, he has garnered national reviews and has led to collaborations with Arturo Sandoval, Paquito D’Rivera, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Antonio Sanchez, John Patitucci, Bill Stewart, Ben Street and many others. Valera is also the leader of his Grammy®-nominated band Manuel Valera and the New Cuban Express, a project deeply influenced by the experiments of Cuban artists from the 70s and 80s that mixes elements of jazz, R&B, Latin Jazz and funk. In addition, he has been awarded several grants for composition including the prestigious Chamber Music America’s New Jazz Works plus he has been the recipient of the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award. Manuel has traveled the world performing in over 30 countries at some of the biggest jazz venues and festivals. Valera will be touring in support of his 2015 album on Destiny Records entitled Urban Landscape, his 11th album as a leader.
