Noah Kite, Lorain, The Secret Sea

In the suburbs of Paris, Noah Kite's music turned toward a kind of chamber pop with teeth. A folk rock both lush and a little angry, inspired by days spent teaching English to Parisian children, a foreign culture's response to terrorism, and a withering long-distance relationship. After finishing his teaching stint, Kite opened the songs up: He toured Belgium, France, Germany, and Italy (performing in the small cafes of Antwerp and the red brick crenellations of old Italian cities like San Gimignano and Pistoia) before returning to Portland to record his self-titled release. That record is now out and he will be christening his return from is record supporting Euro tour with a show at the Fremont Theater.

Lorain plays woozy American music. Employing an expressive tenor, recalling ghosts of Nashville Skyline era Dylan and the late Jason Molina, which floats over lush textures and the band's understated groove.

THE SECRET SEA (Amit Erez) is a cult-status indie icon from Tel Aviv, now living in Portland Oregon. He is one of the first and most substantial and influential songwriters to emerge from Israel this past decade, known for his incredible guitar finger-picking and emotional delivery. Active since 2003 and the second artist to sign with Anova Music (Israel's leading indie label), he's released four albums under his own name, supported by European tours and festivals.
