PDX Jazz Presents: Joe Lovano Classic Quartet (Late Show)

The burly tone of Grammy® Award-winning multi-reedist Joe Lovano is one of the most recognizable sounds in modern jazz. As a decorated sideman, he’s been heard with everyone from Woody Herman, Dave Holland, McCoy Tyner, Mel Lewis Orchestra, Herbie Hancock, Dr. Lonnie Smith and countless others. But most notably he’s been recognized as a high profile collaborator from the Saxophone Summit, to a trio with Paul Motion and Bill Frisell, and projects with Hank Jones, Esperanza Spalding and Elvin Jones. However, his role as a leader since signing with Blue Note in 1991 has been remarkable with virtually every album being a singular and fresh statement even after almost two dozen releases with the legendary label. In 2014 Lovano won awards for Multi-reeds Player and Tenor Saxophonist of the Year from the Jazz Journalists Association and Tenor Saxophonist of the Year from DownBeat Magazine. He was last heard in Portland at the 2016 Biamp PDX Jazz Festival in a program with John Scofield, and now he’s back with his Classic Quartet with whom Lovano will explore the rich history of jazz from swing through bebop.

“After 30 albums as a leader and at least 25 years in the spotlight, it’s clear Joe Lovano is more than a dominant figure in jazz. He’s jazz’s answer to George Clooney or Jeff Bridges, a vibrant player who delivers an award-worthy performance every time out.” – Wall Street Journal
