PDX Jazz Festival: Descarga for Monk & Diz (early show)

The PDX Jazz Festival is a multi-venue series of jazz events presented each February within Portland, Oregon. Nationally and regionally supported as a cultural tourism initiative in celebration of Black History Month, PDX Jazz Festival is dedicated to preserving America’s indigenous art form by presenting internationally recognized jazz masters alongside local jazz musicians

Descarga for Monk & Diz is a special program dedicated to the music of Thelonious Monk and Dizzy Gillespie with a flamenco and Latin jazz twist in an exclusive For Portland Only experience. 

Featuring John Santos, Alex Conde & Bobby Torres

Seven-time Grammy®-nominated percussionist and 2013-2014 SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director John Santos is one of the foremost exponents of Afro-Latin music in the world today. He is known for his innovative use of Afro-Latin traditional forms and instruments in combination with contemporary music, and has earned him accolades as a performer, composer, radio programmer, and record producer whose career has spanned four decades. He has performed and/or recorded with multi-generational masters such as Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Max Roach, Bobby Hutcherson, Buenavista Social Club, Billy Cobham, Zakir Hussain, George Cables, Joe Henderson, Regina Carter,  Jon Faddis, McCoy Tyner, Poncho Sanchez, Omar Sosa, Ignacio Berroa, Tootie Heath, Art Farmer, Larry Coryell, Pedrito Martinez, Arturo Sandoval, Lalo Schifrin, Rhiannon and Carlos Santana. John is also widely respected as one of the top writers, teachers and historians in the field and was a member of the Latin Jazz Advisory Committee of the Smithsonian Institution, plus he was featured prominently in the PBS American Masters 2008 documentary, Cachao: Uno Mas.

Alex Conde is a vibrant and visionary jazz and flamenco pianist originally from Spain. Conde has been in the US for the last ten years and began his tenure here after winning a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. Since that time, Conde has collaborated and shared the stage with jazz luminaries such as Chano Domínguez, Joe Lovano, Maria Schneider, Wayne Shorter, The Bad Plus and Esperanza Spalding. Alex has regularly performed at jazz festivals around the world and has also become a regular pianist on flamenco tours around the US, Latin America, and Canada. His most recent album, Descarga for Monk, was voted “Best of 2015” by DownBeat Magzine and provides a basis for this exclusive For Portland Only program. Santos and Conde will be joined by Portland performers Bobby Torres, Reinhardt Meltz, Al Criado, Dick Titterington.

Oregon Music Hall of Famer and master conguero Bobby Torres has led a celebrated career as a session player and live performer with a 40 year career that has seen him perform with the likes of Tom Jones, Arlo Guthrie, David Foster, Mark Almond, Jackson Browne, Tim Weisberg, Dr. John and countless others. He was recently reunited with many greats as an alumni member of the cherished Joe Cocker Mad Dogs & Englishmen project in the UK. Closer to home, Bobby gigs regularly in Portland with his own Latin jazz ensemble and in April 2016 he was the recipient of the prestigious Jazz Journalist’s Association Jazz Hero Award for his life’s dedication to performing and educating his community about the music known as jazz.
