PDX Jazz Presents: Marquis Hill Blacktet (Late Show)

“For much of the last decade, Marquis Hill fit the description of a prized local phenomenon.” – The New York Times

Trumpeter, composer and Thelonious Monk Competition winner Marquis Hill was raised on Chicago’s South Side with his introduction to music was made by taking up the drum kit in the fourth grade before picking up the trumpet. Hill had a natural feel for the instrument and soon developed his signature warm, mellifluous tone that has drawn comparisons to Clifford Brown, Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw. Upon finalizing his formal education with a Master of Music degree in Jazz Pedagogy from DePaul University, Hill moved to NYC and began working frequently as a sideman with the likes of Joe Lovano, Milton Suggs, and Von Freeman, and as the leader of his own ensemble Blacktet.  Hill has five albums to his credit, including his most recent release with Blacktet entitled The Way We Play, his 2016 debut for the esteemed Concord Jazz label, that focuses on inventive interpretations of jazz standards flavored with touches of post-bop swing and hip hop/R&B groove.
